There’s a lot to consider when looking to buy or rent a new home. Yes, energy-efficient appliances and windows are a good feature to consider to lower your utility costs, but so is geography. Is this new home in close proximity to where you work or where your kids will go to school? How about things like a gym, supermarket or places of worship? The more you commute, the more gas is used, which means more environmental impact and more money spent. These should all be considered when searching for a new home.

It’s well-known that LED (light-emitting diode) lightbulbs are the most energy-efficient bulb types, but caution should be used when considering them for outdoor lighting. The reason? Scientists have discovered that the unnatural lighting is attractive to migrating birds, and it can lead to injuries and death when birds collide with buildings and other structures that reflect that light. The solution is not to abandon LED bulbs, but to choose ones that have filters that block the direct light. Look for LED bulbs that are designed specifically for outdoor use or have color coatings on the bulb to diffuse the artificial light.

Take a look in your pantry for old, forgotten packets of yeast. Expired yeast may not be good for making a loaf of bread, but it can still be used to protect your garden from pests. Mix the yeast with a little salt, sugar and warm water. This sugary, salty, yeasty mixture is irresistible for slugs in your garden. Just pour it into shallow dishes and the slugs will crawl right in and drown. Place the dishes of yeast mixture every six to eight feet for the best results.
