If you love to craft with kids, it’s important to stock up on supplies that are free of harsh chemicals. Many products like ink pads, markers and craft paints can contain asthma-triggering chemicals or have high levels of volatile organic compounds. The basic rule of thumb is, if the product has a smell, it’s likely chemical-based. How do you avoid these products? Look for labels that say “nontoxic” or “water-based” for the cleanest options. And search online for ways to make DIY paints, play dough and even slime using all-natural ingredients.

If you create a fire in your fireplace during the winter months, you know it’s important not to burn things like pressure-treated wood, cardboard and plywood, since they can release a significant amount of toxins into the air when burned. But did you know that it’s also imperative to not burn driftwood? Even though it came from a tree and simply tumbled in the ocean, driftwood also acts like a sponge, absorbing chemicals in the oceans that -- you guessed it -- are released when burned.

Microfiber cleaning towels have become popular as a cleaning tool because they grip dirt and bacteria, can be used on a variety of surfaces and are seemingly infinitely reusable. But new studies have shown that washing microfiber cloths in the washing machine leads to small strands of synthetic fibers washing down the drain and into our aquatic ecosystems. To avoid this (and disinfect microfiber towels), try microwaving them. Simply placing a damp cloth in the microwave on high for a minute will clean and disinfect it and won’t shed fibers into our waterways.
