It’s believed that up to 20 percent of the 45 million people who wear disposable contact lenses flush them down the toilet. While it may not seem like a big deal to have the tiny plastic lenses go down the drain, it ends up leading to significant ocean pollution. The lenses break down and become “microplastics,” which marine life mistake for food and eat. This not only poisons marine life, but it can end up in our food supply as well. If you wear contacts, dispose of them properly in the trash and not down the drain. Or better yet: Wear eyeglasses when you can.

If you use a pitcher with a water filter inside (like a Brita-style model), it can feel wasteful when you replace the filter every month for a new one. The good thing about the activated charcoal filters is that they also make excellent containers to grow new plants. All you have to do is snip off the top and fill the charcoal mixture with growing soil, then plant your seeds or starter plants inside. The filters have natural drainage holes, so you can liberally water them without any fear. And once the starter plants are mature, just transplant and reuse the old filters indefinitely as planters.

If the inside soles of your shoes are a little stinky, it’s easy to give them a freshening up without having to scrub them clean. First, sprinkle baking soda inside and let it sit for a few hours; the natural deodorizing properties will help lift odors. Then shake out the excess and spritz some vodka or rubbing alcohol inside to sanitize. Finally, stuff the shoes with newspaper; the newsprint is designed to absorb ink, so it’ll absorb excess odors and moisture, too.
