Think twice about ordering coffee or tea when you’re traveling by plane. According to a story published by Travel and Leisure, most flight attendants won’t drink a hot beverage made on the plane, because the water used comes from the tap. Water samples taken from planes have shown a high percentage of harmful bacteria; in fact, one in eight planes fails the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards for water safety. Instead, bring a reusable thermos and fill it up at the airport prior to boarding.

If you have annoying houseflies and fruit flies zipping around your kitchen, avoid the temptation to grab a chemical spray, hang glue traps or even swat them with your hands. One of the easiest ways to capture them is to simply use apple cider vinegar. The insects are attracted to the pungent smell and will fly directly to it. To capture the flies, add a few drops of liquid soap on top. This slick surface is enough to create something called “surface tension,” so the flies will sink and drown on contact.

One of the biggest culprits of waste is buying lunch in disposable containers on a daily basis. But it can also be a real waste of money, equaling about $2,000 a year on average per person. By bringing your lunch, you can cut back on all the waste when you use reusable containers. And you can also use reusable hot and cold beverage bottles at work, one for your morning coffee (and most coffee shops give a discount for bringing a bottle) and one to fill with filtered water from free water fountains.
