In most communities, you're given two trash receptacles -- one for recycling and one for actual garbage. Ever wonder what happens if you decide to not recycle and use both for trash? If a recycling container (full of trash) is picked up, it can contaminate an entire load of recyclables. Not only does this potentially divert a whole truck of recyclables to the landfill, but it can also cost you money. Many trash companies notice misuse of bins and will bill you for the additional trash and inconvenience of contaminating a load of recyclables.

Have some rusty tools that could use a good cleaning? When your workshop or gardening tools have oxidized and turned rusty, you can easily wipe away the rust by using a kitchen staple: a potato. Potatoes are high in ferric oxalate, which turns the rust into a sludge-like substance that is easily wiped away. Cut a potato in half (perhaps use spuds past their prime) and wipe away. Or grate a potato, cover the whole rusty tool and let it sit for a few minutes. You'll see the rust soften and be ready for a quick cleanup.

Take a look in your junk drawer and see if you have ketchup packets just sitting there. Instead of tearing them open for a bag of fries, use them to get your copper pots and silver jewelry tarnish-free. Squeeze ketchup all over the tarnished surface and let it sit for a few minutes. The high concentration of vinegar in ketchup -- called an acetic acid -- eats away at the tarnish. Buff with a damp towel and dry. It really does work!
