This may make you think twice about drinking soda: The high acidity in soda pop can help clean grouted tile countertops, floors or walls. If you have a party or find yourself with leftover cans or bottles of soda, don’t pour it down the drain before recycling the empty containers. Literally pour the excess soda on top of dirty grout and let it sit for a few minutes. Then use a damp cloth to wipe it up; you’ll see how all that acid in soda breaks it all down to a gleaming finish.

Did you know for nearly 15 percent of families living in poverty, buying a winter coat is usually out of budget? According to the nonprofit One Winter Coat, just a 2-degree reduction in body temperature can result in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination and confusion, and it also can make it difficult for children to learn. A simple winter coat can be the solution. Visit onewarmcoat.org and use the donation link to find the closest drop-off point near you. It will guide you to where lightly worn winter coats can be donated. Learn more at onewarmcoat.org.

Fire starters and fire logs you purchase at the store may be a quick and easy way to get a fire started, but they aren’t necessarily a green or healthy choice. The fire logs inside the paper bag are full of compressed sawdust, waxes and flammable chemicals designed to slowly burn. If you plan on roasting marshmallows over an open fire, you won’t be able to if you choose one of these products to get your fire going. And the small fire-starter sticks that look like dog treats can also be lethal if ingested. It’s best to stick with simple fire starters like egg cartons, cardboard and scrap paper.
