The reason is that they’re not just paper; they’re made of something called “thermopaper” that is coated in plastic and is designed to react to heat. That’s how information is printed on the ATM slips with ink (and why they are slightly warm when you retrieve them). If you can, opt for no receipts at the ATM. But if you must have receipts, be sure to toss them in the trash and never recycle them.
