With warmer spring weather here, many of us turn to power washers to blast away grime, dirt and debris from outdoor furniture, decking and the sides of houses. But using conventional pressure-washing solution can also mean spraying a non-biodegradable mixture all over the yard, into the ground and onto outdoor plants. Instead of using a store-bought solution, use one that’s effective, eco-friendly and that you can make at home. In a large bucket, mix 1 gallon water, 1/3 cup phosphate-free laundry detergent and 2/3 cup powdered eco-friendly all-purpose cleaning powder. Mix slowly to avoid clumping, and use as you normally would with your power washer.

Here’s how to disinfect and deodorize a kitchen towel and clean your grimy microwave all at the same time. Rinse your kitchen towel in the sink, and ring out the excess moisture. Place it inside your microwave and zap it on high for about 2 minutes. The microwave will disinfect the towel by heating it up, while the moisture from the towel releases steam, loosening up grime and making cleanup a breeze. Just wait a minute before wiping away the inside of the microwave with a damp sponge -- or use the towel inside and then launder as usual.

Crafters, listen up: Your collection of handmade pottery, crocheted items, watercolors and homemade jewelry can go to someone who loves it and help support a worthy cause at the same time. The nonprofit Made4Aid collects handmade and vintage items and sells them on Etsy to support the charity Doctors Without Borders. The organization looks for small and easy-to-ship items like etchings, jewelry, T-shirts, ornaments, baby items, craft supplies, bags and decorative items. To see if your crafty skills can help others, check out the group's website at made4aid.org.
