It may look sparkly and pretty, but hanging up string lights outdoors could be hellish for wild animals. When you string lights around trees and bushes, wild animals like birds and deer can get tangled up in the lights. Deer, for example, often scrape their antlers on the sides of trees. During the day -- when the lights aren't so obvious -- they can get caught up and tangled. If you must hang lights, do it near your home, and be sure the lights are attached firmly and out of harm's way.

If you like the convenience of plastic wrap but not the disposability and non-recyclability of the product, consider investing in new silicone wraps. These silicone covers stretch to fit whatever bowl, cut food or pitcher to create an airtight seal. They are reusable, and the covers don't retain odor or flavors. It's a small investment that can help keep leftovers fresh and cut back on waste at home.

Buying vintage is usually a green option, since it allows you to reuse items, but when it comes to dishes, there is a bit more work needed to make sure you don't end up using lead-based plates, cups and bowls. Ceramic tableware that is highly decorated or has decoration on top of the glaze could be loaded with lead. Generally, when in doubt, don't buy these items. But if antiques interest you, pressed glass is a safe way to go. And remember: Never use questionable vintage plates and bowls to serve food and drinks to children.
