Buying vintage is usually a green option, since it allows you to reuse items, but when it comes to dishes, there is a bit more work needed to make sure you don't end up using lead-based plates, cups and bowls. Ceramic tableware that is highly decorated or has decoration on top of the glaze could be loaded with lead. Generally, when in doubt, don't buy these items. But if antiques interest you, pressed glass is a safe way to go. And remember: Never use questionable vintage plates and bowls to serve food and drinks to children.

We all know that having houseplants indoors can help filter out toxins and purify the air in your home. But not all plants are the same when it comes to freshening the air. The master of air purification award goes to the Boston fern, which tops the list of most effective in purification. And they are pretty easy to maintain and keep alive: Just place the fern by a window for lots of sun and water every few days. Move the plant from room to room regularly to purify the air all over your house.
