Dry cleaners use plastic bags on freshly cleaned clothes to make sure they don't get stained in transit. When you get your clothes home, don't store them in the bag. Since the bags are airtight, moisture can get trapped inside and create a breeding ground for odor and mildew. And if you reuse the bags to cover clothes, stains can oxidize, which makes them impossible to clean in the future. Instead, remove the bags and recycle them in the same recycling bins that accept plastic shopping bags.

Do you receive magazines in the mail that you don't remember subscribing to? You're not alone. Many publishers are working with online retailers to give "free" subscriptions as a reward for shopping on certain sites. But for many of us, the magazine is a waste, not a welcome gift. To avoid receiving magazines, do two things. First, always make sure to read the fine print before clicking "purchase" on websites. You can opt out of free subscriptions. Second, if you do receive a magazine, contact the publication and ask how you ended up on the list. Then you'll have the option to refuse the subscription moving forward.

A leaky toilet can waste around 200 gallons of water per day. If you have a leaky toilet, make the effort to get it fixed. Also, take notice when you see water-wasting toilets at work, in hotel rooms and at the gym. These are easy places to report broken fixtures to management so they can be fixed. Not only do these simple steps save water, they also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, since it takes energy to pump and treat water, too.
