When you forget to bring your reusable thermos to your local coffee shop, it doesn't mean you need to toss the disposable cup when you're done sipping your java. The cardboard sleeve that protects your hands from burning is easily recyclable; it's corrugated cardboard and can be tossed right into your recycling bin (or reused!). If you're at Starbucks, you can also toss the coffee cup, lid and sleeve right into the recycling bins most stores have conveniently located inside the store.

The little stickers you see on produce at the store contain a code called a PLU, or a price lookup code, to help supermarkets accurately check out fruits and vegetables. The codes do have significance and can be helpful in determining if the item you're buying is organic. If the PLU code starts with a 9, that means it's organically grown. No 9, and it's conventionally grown. Some markets are changing, so be sure to ask at the grocery store to find out the code differences.

Tiny plastic microbeads have been used in beauty products, toothpaste and even home cleaning products for years as an abrasive for skin, teeth and surfaces. But the problem with these tiny beads is that when they are washed down the shower drain, they are not biodegradable, and they end up ingested by aquatic wildlife. Since the ingredients list for personal care products do not need to warn about microbeads, it can be impossible for consumers to tell what products contain them. The nonprofit North Sea Foundation has created an app called "Warning! Plastics Inside!" where you can scan any product and it will tell if it contains microbeads. Download the app for any smartphone for free.
