When the trees shed their leaves in the fall, raking up the leaves and using them as beneficial mulch is a simple and natural way to have a lush garden next spring. One way to speed up the process is to shred the leaves, usually by running a lawnmower over them. But avoid doing this for leaves that come from walnut and eucalyptus trees. These leaves have a natural substance that acts like an herbicide. If you place these leaves in the garden, they will inhibit plant growth. Instead, compost them so they naturally decompose.

How can you tell if an egg in the refrigerator is fresh? Just toss it into a glass of water. Eggshells are porous, which means that over time, air builds up inside the eggshell. The older they are, the more air builds up and eventually it goes rotten. If the egg is no longer fresh, the excess air will force the egg to float. If it's still fresh, it will sink. Then it's safe and good to eat.

Animal abuse is something that most of us do not tolerate and would like to see abolished. But if you are witness to abuse -- whether it's an emaciated horse or a dog chained to a tree -- it's important to have three facts before reporting it to the animal welfare authorities. First, first-hand observation is key. If you didn't see it yourself, you cannot report it. Second, mark down the exact address where you witnessed the abuse, along with cross streets and the time of day and date. Third, if you can (without trespassing), use your phone to document the situation with photos. Then contact your animal welfare or animal control office to make the report.
