If you have to print a lot of text documents, one simple trick to cut back on paper waste is to decrease the margin sizes on your documents. Most word processor software is set with margins that give you ample space around the perimeter of the paper, even if the printer can print with wider margins. By decreasing the margin sizes to .75 inches on the top, bottom, left and right, you can easily fit more words onto each sheet of paper. More words means less paper, and less paper means fewer dead trees.

If you've accidentally spilled nail polish onto a wood surface, the natural reaction might be to use nail polish remover to lift the stain. The problem? It will remove the protective coating, finish and stain on the wood. Instead, reach for a bottle of spray deodorant. Let the nail polish harden and then spray the deodorant on top. Let it soak for about 30 seconds and wipe away. The deodorant has solvents that soften tough stains but aren't so strong they strip varnish. Which should also make you question: Is a substance that strong really something you want to use on your body?

It seems most holiday candy -- for Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween or Christmas -- comes in chocolate form. If you find yourself with an excess stash of chocolate, you can extend the life of the candy by freezing it. Keep the chocolates in an airtight container and place it in the freezer; it can last months. When you're ready to thaw the chocolate, be sure to do so in the refrigerator and not on the kitchen counter. Any condensation that occurs can affect the appearance, texture and taste of the chocolate. Slowly thawing it in the refrigerator prevents this from happening.
