Have a musky leather coat that you would like to freshen and make smell like new? Since you can’t toss it into the washing machine, and expert dry cleaning can be very expensive, give this natural trick a try instead: Use the sun. On a bright, sunny day, turn the coat inside out and lay it on a large towel in a sunny spot for several hours. The natural ultraviolet rays from the sun will eradicate odor-causing bacteria, and inverting it will protect the leather from fading. You can also place the coat in an airtight storage box with a bowl of baking soda in the box. The baking soda will absorb odors naturally over the course of a week.

Filtering water at home has become easier with a variety of at-home filtration systems, helping us kick the bottled water habit for good. But while we know filtered water is good for us to drink, have you thought about using it in your fish tanks? Tap water can have high levels of chlorine and ammonia, which are often used in water treatment plants. This can change the PH levels of the water, which affects the quality of living for fish. Using filtered water in fish tanks can go a long way toward giving our aquatic friends a healthy, long and happy life.

The outdoor gear and clothing company Patagonia has always been a pioneer in sustainability. Its new Worn Wear program is an innovative project where it buys back its used clothes (that are in good condition), like fleece, down jackets and ski pants. These items are available for sale in the Worn Wear section in the shop next to new Patagonia clothes. And if the company won’t buy your old Patagonia duds due to condition, it will recycle your clothes for free. Learn more at patagonia.com
