Whenever you can cut back on paper usage, no matter how small, it adds up over time. Try selecting “no receipt” at the ATM when you withdraw cash; don’t print out a boarding pass at home for your flight, just send it straight to your smartphone; email yourself your grocery list instead of jotting it down on paper and read it off your phone instead. Little paperless decisions definitely add up.

Pruning trees, hedges and shrubs are gardening chores that should only take place in the fall and winter months. The reason? In spring and summer, birds have started nesting and have carefully hidden their nests in gardens. Haphazardly cutting away at limbs and overgrowth could easily cause damage or scare off birds, forcing them to abandon their eggs or chicks. If you must prune, do so carefully and be observant of any birds that may be flying near the area frequently. If they are, there's a good chance there is a nest nearby.

Even if you're not in the market for a new pet, you can help promote pet rescue by visiting your local shelter's website. Just "like" available pets on Facebook, follow and retweet the shelter on Twitter and pin pictures to your Pinterest page to generate viral marketing support. Using social media can help spread the word about a great pet up for adoption and help him find a forever home.
