Here's the easiest Do Just One Thing that comes to mind: Use revolving doors when visiting stores and office buildings. Rotating doors stop heat and air conditioning from escaping from the building. Using a regular door can create a vacuum effect: The hot air of summer is forced into the store, causing the system to work harder to cool the place. Choosing a revolving door is an easy and green thing you can do every day.

Now is the time to think about efficient ways to keep your home cool in the hot and humid summer months. For rooms that are not air conditioned, invest in window screens that fit snugly in place. At night, open the windows to take advantage of the naturally cool night air and flush out the hot, stale air. Close the windows during the day. Take the time to examine vents throughout the home: If drapes, furniture or rugs are blocking floor vents, move them now so the airflow can be unobstructed.

Here are two easy switches you can do to save on lighting costs. First, if you have track lighting, unscrew one bulb from the track. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, three bulbs can usually do the same job as four bulbs if the lights are positioned correctly. Second, switch your lampshades to lighter colors. Dark shades absorb light. A lighter shade spreads the light and reflects it for maximum effect.
