If buying large electronics or beauty products at the store frustrates you because they come in layers of excess packaging, do what the bloggers behind thezerowastehome.com do: Leave the packaging behind at the store. Many stores recycle plastic and paper, so they'll add your packaging to their recycling system. And if the store refuses, the message will be heard loud and clear that customers are refusing packaging material.

Warehouse clubs can be a great place to buy organic produce at bulk prices. But if the thought of eating 10 pounds of fresh carrots seems daunting, think about creating a mini co-op with your neighbors: Divide up the fresh produce, and share in the savings. Buy seasonal organic fruits and vegetables -- think berries and leafy greens. It is a simple way to eat healthier while saving money.

Shopping at stores like Costco can save you about 20 percent on your organic purchases, but shop wisely: Throwing away uneaten perishables is like throwing money in the trash. Try stocking up on long-lasting organics like Costco's Kirkland organic olive oil, which is $14 for 51 ounces. Other warehouse club staples at bargain basement prices: whole organic chicken ($2.29 a pound); five pounds of organic mixed veggies ($5.59); and 10 pounds of whole organic carrots ($6.49). Compare that to supermarket prices: organic chicken is $3.99 a pound; it's $14 for five pounds of organic mixed veggies; and 10 pounds of organic carrots cost $10.
