Over-packing for a vacation may seem like a safe way to make sure you have everything you could possibly need, but it also takes a toll on the fuel efficiency of cars and planes. The heavier your stuff, the more fuel your mode of transportation needs to get it to and from your destination. Pack light and always remember this one simple rule: If you forgot something, it's not hard to get it wherever your vacation takes you.

If you have a big celebration coming up where gifts are involved, such as a wedding, birthday or housewarming party, think about registering at a nursery for plants instead of a traditional department store. Plants can be bought to beautify your yard and guests can choose from pricey trees to pallets of pansies.

If you're planning to take an extended vacation or know you'll be away from your home for more than one week at a time, try to use up everything in your fridge before you leave. Consuming all the perishable items and leaving it completely bare means you can unplug the fridge to save electricity while you're away. Even if there are just a few perishable items like eggs, milk and butter, tossing them may save you more money then keeping them in the fridge.
