A warm, breezy, spring day is the perfect time to do just one thing to detox your home: cross-ventilate it. Simply open windows in the front and back of the house and allow the air to flush out toxins out of the home. All of the volatile organic compounds that have collected inside the home during the winter months will flush out and leave a home that's cleaner, fresher and healthier to live in.

When buying art supplies whether for yourself or your kids, be sure to stock up on products that are labeled "non-toxic" or "water-based" to cut back on toxins and chemicals. Many ink pads, markers and paints are full of asthma-inducing chemicals or have high levels of volatile organic compounds. When you are crafting simply for fun, it's best to go with materials that are safe and chemical-free.

One way to cut down on trash is to make the task of throwing something "away" a little less convenient and more noticeable. Instead of having several small trash cans around the house to dispose of refuse, have one central larger trash can -- in the kitchen, perhaps. This will force anyone to carry whatever it is they are throwing away to the trash and be constantly reminded that "away" is never really gone forever.
