While a clothesline may be the greenest option, it's not necessarily the fastest or most practical one -- especially this time of year. So to save time, try to dry one batch of clothes after another; the residual heat from the first batch will dry the next one faster. Add a DRY towel to a batch of wet clothes in the dryer; the towel will absorb moisture while the clothing dries and speed up the drying process.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, "lighting accounts for close to 20 percent of the average home's electric bill." So instead of using old-fashioned incandescent bulbs, make the switch to energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. According to Energy Star, CFLs can "use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer." Help out friends and family, too, by buying CFLs in bulk at stores like Costco and Sam's Club. Share the eco-wealth and save some money too.

Using a full dishwasher is more energy and water efficient than washing by hand. One way to make sure you use the dishwasher right is to properly secure anything that's plastic by placing it in the right compartment. If it's too loose and a spray of water moves it to the bottom of the dishwasher, internal heating elements could melt it, causing the dishwasher to malfunction.
