Think "less is more" when buying newborns toys to play with. Look for organic, unbleached plush toys, unpainted wooden blocks, decorative accessories and polyvinyl chloride-free (PVC-free) or plastic-free toys. Look for bibs, playmats and placemats that are also PVC-free and, if possible, 100 percent certified organic cotton.

When buying a crib mattress, look for one that is completely free of polyvinyl chloride -- a waterproof material that has been linked to off-gassing chemicals. The baby's immune system is still developing at a very young age, so choose a crib mattress made with chemical-free natural materials. Natural latex, soy-enhanced foam, organic cotton and organic wool are healthier choices are for your baby.

While it may seem like the greenest choice to reuse an antique crib or buy one secondhand, it can actually be a dangerous one. Because babies spend the majority of their time sleeping, it makes sense to invest in the very best, non-toxic crib you can find. Older cribs may have peeling paint, broken slats or could have been recalled. If you insist on reusing a crib that isn't too old, check www.recalls.gov to make sure it's safe. When buying a new crib, be sure to find one coated with nontoxic paint or finishes and made with sustainable materials like bamboo. Another green, money-saving tip: Look for convertible beds that easily transition from a crib to a toddler bed, extending their usefulness.
