When it's time for you to wash your car, think of going to the car wash and not doing it yourself. Washing your own car at home uses more than 100 gallons of water and can be a laborious task to undertake. Going through an automatic car wash uses around 50 percent less water according to the International Carwash Association. Plus, all the waste water is usually collected and treated, too.

When sending your kids to college, what they sleep on in their dorm rooms can be very questionable. While buying a new mattress may not be possible, buying a new mattress cover is. A mattress cover zips all around the top and bottom of the bed, creating a barrier between it and your kid. Whatever may be lurking inside -- dust mites, bed bugs, mold and mildew -- will be stopped by the cover, creating a healthier, better sleep.

If you live in a community where people raise their own chickens and sell the fresh eggs, consider saving your egg cartons, both cardboard and Styrofoam, and giving your collection to them. They'll gladly recycle them by using them to store fresh eggs. Who knows? Maybe they'll even give you a dozen free eggs for the generous gift.
