If you do want to feed waterfowl, skip stale bread and choose more healthful alternatives that are aligned to their natural diet, like grapes cut in half, thawed peas or corn, kale and other leafy greens like romaine lettuce. Also, be mindful of a park's rules on feeding and always clean up after your visit.

While you may have warm childhood memories of feeding bread to ducks and geese, it's a practice that needs to be stopped. Bread is low in needed nutrients for water fowl, and some animals may never learn how to forage for wild food if they become accustomed to being fed by humans.
