Do you still buy bagged ice at your local store? Bagged ice is a waste of energy, literally. Bagged ice sits for weeks -- if not months -- in the large freezer compartments, using up countless loads of electricity in order to stay frozen. Instead, invest in ice cube trays and do it yourself. And with so many ice cube trays that come in a variety of shapes, this is more fun, too.

Ever wonder what to do with all those annoying Styrofoam packing peanuts? Have some fun: Buy an empty beanbag chair cover and fill it up! If you don't have enough peanuts to fill up a chair, ask friends or co-workers. They are sure to have packing peanuts that they'll be glad to contribute to your chair-building project.

If you filter tap water in an effort to cut back on plastic bottled water usage, good for you! But when it comes time to replace those carbon filters, don't toss them into the trash. Save them for household hazardous waste pickup and dispose of them properly. The carbon filters actually do a great job in removing harmful metals from water, but by throwing them in the trash you risk reintroducing those metals right back into the waterways.
