Today's the day to revisit your local library. Sign up for a free membership card and check out the variety of resources available to you and your family. Besides books, libraries also have archives of magazines, CDs and DVDs and a wealth of digital research materials. P.S. -- Support the library's used-book sale, which raises money for its nonprofit work; you get books at a discount and will help raise money for a great cause.

You know those little terra cotta pots you've been meaning to grow herbs in? Take them out of the closet, scrub them clean, and fill them with Band-Aids, little bars of soap or keep your toothbrush and toothpaste together in one. It's a simple way to keep your medicine cabinet organized.

Having trouble getting to sleep? Try aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the belief that the right scent can evoke a certain mood when breathed in: Peppermint can excite and lavender can soothe. But instead of spending lots of money on pricey linen sprays, make your own. Fill a mister bottle with distilled water and add about 20 drops of lavender oil (from the natural health food store). Shake and spray on your sheets. Then just lie down and relax.
