If you need to bring a gift to a party, think edible and perishable. Gift-giving is complex: People will either truly love the present or stash it away to never use it again. With a gift of food, the recipients can either enjoy it at their leisure or share it at the party. Wine, cookies, a bag of organic coffee or a bouquet of wildflowers are some good ideas.

In the mad rush to prepare for Thanksgiving, remember to have a vegetarian backup plan for the animal-friendly guest. Since nothing can be more awkward than a veggie guest with nothing to eat at the dining room table, be sure to pick up vegan (no meat, dairy or eggs) frozen treats from your health food store. Since there are all types of vegetarians, choosing something vegan will cover all your bases. Some delectable choices: vegan pot pie, Tofurky brand soy "turkey" and soy macaroni and cheese.

For the freshest and most flavorful choices for your Thanksgiving dinner, think local. A local farmer's market will not only have the most abundant and best-tasting winter fruits and vegetables, it's often cheaper, too. Local farmers also mean local prices, so you'll save a bundle. Also, consider locally made pies, cheeses -- even flower arrangements and wine. You'll support local businesses, your community and use less fuel to ship all the goodies from the farm to your table.
