For the freshest and most flavorful choices for your Thanksgiving dinner, think local. A local farmer's market will not only have the most abundant and best-tasting winter fruits and vegetables, it's often cheaper, too. Local farmers also mean local prices, so you'll save a bundle. Also, consider locally made pies, cheeses -- even flower arrangements and wine. You'll support local businesses, your community and use less fuel to ship all the goodies from the farm to your table.

Added tip: If you don't have a membership to a wholesale club, go shopping with a friend as his or her guest!

Buy in bulk when you need it most. Many shoppers who frequent wholesale clubs end up buying items they really don't need in bulk, so perishable items like salad dressing and produce can go to waste. Avoid this by keeping a tally of what you really use and make it a point to only buy frequently used items in bulk. You'll save money, cut back on excess packaging and make fewer trips to the store to buy these items.
