While it may be tempting to put out a heated bird bath to offer a fresh supply of water in the freezing cold, don't. Birds are drawn to the warm water to drink and bathe in, but don't realize they could quickly freeze to death just mere seconds after leaving. In the winter, turn over your bird baths and fill them up again in the spring when the weather turns warmer.

Yes, those plastic bags you bring back to the grocery store really do get recycled. Trex, the recycled plastic lumber company, is one of the largest purchasers of old plastic bags, which it shreds and makes into durable, warp-free lumber. So, while the greenest choice is to bring your own reusable bags to the store, you can still feel good when you do bring back some plastic bags for recycling.

When paying your electric bill, check to see if you can purchase "green" power as on option from your utility company. Many utility companies are offering eco power -- solar and wind power, for example -- to their customers. Sometimes it's as easy as checking a box on your bill. If your company doesn't offer green power, call its representatives and ask that it does. Enough calls may drive them to offer this option.
