If you filter tap water in an effort to cut back on plastic bottled water usage, good for you! But when it comes time to replace those carbon filters, don't toss them into the trash. Save them for household hazardous waste pickup and dispose of them properly. The carbon filters actually do a great job in removing harmful metals from water, but by throwing them in the trash you risk reintroducing those metals right back into the waterways.

Refresh the washing machine. Pour two cups of white vinegar in the washing machine and let it run through a regular cycle (without clothes). This will dissolve all soap residues and help the machine run (almost) like new.

If you live in the city and the sounds of cars and sirens are keeping you up at night, consider making white noise. The whir of a fan can help cover up the noise and contribute to a quieter, more restful sleep.
