The Humane Society of the United States says prevention is the best way to make sure you don't lose a family pet like a cat or a dog. Start with an inexpensive microchip (your veterinarian or animal shelter can insert it) and register it for free on sites like FindPet.com or FreePetChipRegistry.com. Be sure the tag says "call my owner" with your name, address and phone number. And if you have an animal that is allowed outdoors, add a note like "OK to be Outside" on the tag, too; sometimes good intentions can accidentally force an animal far away from home.
