The National Restaurant Association says American restaurants throw away 22 to 33 billion pounds of food every year. There are steps you can take to help reduce waste when you dine out. First, bring your own reusable takeout container with you; fill it with leftovers to enjoy at home. Omit anything you definitely will not eat when you order; saying "hold the onions, tomatoes, etc." goes a long way in reducing waste. And order less than you think you need; we often "eat" with our eyes, so go with smaller portions -- you may find it's plenty.
