Ever wonder what to do with the shells of nuts such as walnuts, pecans and pistachios? Scatter them in the garden as beneficial mulch. Any residual salt on the shells will help deter slugs from attacking your plants. Another idea is to use them with indoor houseplants: Line the bottom of a planter with shells, then fill with soil. The shells will help provide drainage for the plant and will decompose into beneficial mulch over time. If there is residual salt on the shells, simply soak them in water first.
