When the cans are full, just crimp them closed so nothing falls out, then recycle in your curbside recycling bin.

But be careful to avoid buying perishable foods like ketchup, mustard, mayo and other condiments in bulk. Most families will not go through the entire supply before it goes bad, so dollar-for-dollar, it's better to buy these items in normal-sized jars. One other item to avoid? Brown rice, which has a shelf life of only six months because it retains its natural oils and fatty acids; when it goes bad, it takes on a rancid taste. White rice, which is free of those fats, has a shelf life of 30 years.

If you're in the market for a new set of pots and pans, consider copper-bottomed. Copper is the best conductor of heat, and it creates an even and more efficient cooking surface. The more even the heat, the faster the cooking time, and the less energy you use to whip up dinner. Also, make sure the lids on your new pots are tight-fitting. Using a loose lid will waste energy and take more time when doing things like bringing water to a boil.
