This may seem obvious, but it’s worth stating here: Never, ever put used needles into the recycling stream. People often put used needles inside recyclable plastic jugs and then assume it’s safe to toss the jug right into the recycling bin. But when sorters at a recycling facility spot used needles on the conveyor belt, the entire operation must be stopped and shut down to safely pull those items off. Not only is this a loss of time, but it’s also a risk to people who work at the recycling facility.

If you ever come across an injured wild animal like a bird or squirrel, it’s good to know how to safely transport it to a wildlife rehabilitation center. Supplies for animal rescue can be kept in your car or are easily sourced wherever you might be. Start with a well-ventilated box; just punch some small holes into a cardboard box to allow airflow. Line the box with soft towels and/or newspaper, then drape a towel over the top of the box, which helps keep the injured animal calm. A local veterinary practice can help or direct you to a nearby wildlife rehabilitation center.

One of the easiest ways to save water during spring and summer months is to know exactly when it’s time to water your lawn. First, try this simple trick: Step on your lawn. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program, if the grass bounces back after you step on it, there’s no need to water. If it lays flat, it’s time to water. And even then, only water early in the morning or late at night, when the sun’s rays don’t evaporate the water. When it’s coolest outside, the ground will have the best chance to soak in all of that invigorating H2O.
