Fire starters and fire logs you purchase at the store may be a quick and easy way to get a fire started, but they aren’t necessarily a green or healthy choice. The fire logs inside the paper bag are full of compressed sawdust, waxes and flammable chemicals designed to slowly burn. If you plan on roasting marshmallows over an open fire, you won’t be able to if you choose one of these products to get your fire going. And the small fire-starter sticks that look like dog treats can also be lethal if ingested. It’s best to stick with simple fire starters like egg cartons, cardboard and scrap paper.

If you’ve ever ironed a shirt or skirt and left a scorch mark, or looked at the sleeves of your favorite sweater and found deodorant marks, no worries: It can be saved. White vinegar is a very mild acid that can help neutralize and remove markings without damaging the fibers of the clothing. Just spray full-strength white vinegar on the stain and gently rub with a clean cloth. You’ll see the stain lift up and transfer to the cloth, leaving you with a garment that is almost as good as new.

Any parent will tell you that their little newborn quickly grows out of their baby clothes. Since baby clothes are often barely worn, one way to help others in need is to donate them to charity. The nonprofit Loved Twice accepts clothing in sizes from 0 to 12 months. The organization not only sorts and cleans the clothing, it also donates the clothing at zero cost to mothers in need. And since baby clothes are small and light, sending a box of love is a very easy thing to do, too. Learn more at lovedtwice.org.
