It's common knowledge that veggie peels, eggshells and coffee grinds are items that are easily compostable and can break down into beneficial mulch for your garden. But there are many other items that are also compostable that don't need to be tossed into the trash or down the drain. Non-dairy milks like soy, almond, rice and cashew can all be composted, too, since they are plant-based and dairy-free. If these milks spoil or go bad, just pour them into the compost and mix.

There's one simple thing you can do to help support critical honeybee colonies: Plant more blue and violet flowers. Researchers found honeybees are naturally attracted to blue and purple-hued flowers, and they produce more nectar as a result. Over time, bees have naturally preferred certain colors, and blue and purple are the clear winners. And as always, never use chemical insecticides and fertilizers in your garden when planting these deep-hued buds.

You know the motto: One man's trash is another man's treasure. When you have something that's not easily recyclable or you can't donate, post whatever you have on the website Freecycle.org. The website connects people in your community and lets you freely link items up for grabs with people who need them. No money changes hands, and it keeps things out of landfills.
