Environmentalists and the scientific community have long said that going on a plant-based or vegetarian diet is one of the best ways to significantly cut your carbon footprint on the planet. But if going all vegetarian is too tough, start by getting rid of just red meat. A recent research study by Bard College shows red meat requires "28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken," and it also needs "11 times more water." Red meat also adds "five times more climate-warming emissions." So instead of a hamburger, try a turkey burger. Then next time go for a veggie burger.

When that bottle of vino is empty, you can take one step to make recycling it just a little bit greener. According to the website Recyclebank.com, never leave the cork in the bottle when you toss it into the recycling bin. Recycling centers do not recycle them and since they are so small, they run the risk of jamming the machinery. And remember to take the time to remove the metal wrapping around the top of the bottle. It is recyclable, so just toss it into a metal can and place it in your recycling bin.

Instead of using one of the big search engines like Google or Yahoo, consider using Ecosia.com instead. It works just like any other search engine to help you find what you need, but it uses its ad revenue to plant trees. When you make a search, targeted ads appear in the results -- like in any search engine. Revenue that's earned from those ads goes to plant trees all over the world. Since 2009, over 3 million trees have already been planted.
