LED lightbulbs are some of the most efficient, long-lasting bulbs around, since they use a fraction of the energy of conventional bulbs and can last up to 20 years. But they can also be expensive. So choose the five light fixtures you use the most at home, and replace those bulbs with LEDs. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this one switch will reduce electricity usage in those fixtures by 75 percent, and it gives you the potential to recoup about $70 a year in electricity savings.

If you're throwing away glue containers, tubes or bottles, make sure there's no wet adhesive inside -- it can contaminate the garbage and create a chemical cocktail in the landfill. The key thing is to let the glue dry out completely. The simplest way to do that is to open the container and let it air dry. A faster way is to spread the glue on old newspapers, or use a knife to cut a slit down the tube to let it air dry. When the glue or adhesive is hard, you can safely throw away the whole thing without fear of contamination.

Are you loading up on healthy superfoods like goji berries, flax seeds, chia seeds and raw nuts to boost your diet? One way to keep these expensive and perishable items safe is to remove them from the packaging they come in. Transfer them to airtight containers like Mason jars or plastic storage containers. Store them in the refrigerator, which stabilizes the oils inside the seeds and nuts and prevent them from spoiling. The best part? Since you can see your ingredients in the fridge, you'll remember to add them to salads, smoothies and other dishes.
