It happens to many homeowners, and when it does, we’re not sure what to do: A bird flies into your home. Keep in mind that the bird is just as scared as you, so bringing more frantic energy to the situation will do no good. First, turn off all the lights and close the drapes and blinds so no window looks like a possible escape. Then open one outside door where the most natural light will pour into the home. This will draw the bird’s attention, and it will most likely fly out the door.

While it isn’t necessary to rinse out recyclable tin cans completely in order to recycle them, residual food can be tempting to wildlife. Many wild animals slice their tongues when they lick the razor-sharp lids in the recycling bin. To prevent this, be diligent about rinsing out the cans and put the tops inside. Stomp the open end so it crimps, making it impossible for the lid to fall out. If this sounds like too much effort, you can also just toss the lid into the trash and recycle the can.

It may sound crazy, but covering your shrubs with more snow can actually help protect them during harsh winter months. Simply shovel freshly fallen snow that is free of salt on the ground to surround bushes and the base of trees. These “snow fences” will create a barrier to protect plants from harsh, chilly winter winds. While covering every bush with burlap screens can also do the job, this simple task of making DIY snow fences with a few throws of the shovel can also have pretty close to the same protective effect.
