A typical compact fluorescent light bulb can be turned on and off about 7,000 times in lifetime, which makes them the perfect choice for light fixtures that are left on for extended periods of time. For light fixtures run by motion detectors or for areas of the home where you turn the light on and off several times, like a walk-in closet, avoid using CFLs. Since those lights will be activated several times a day for short periods of time, this will shorten the life span of the CFL.
