Winter may not be the time most people think about spring gardening, but what you plant this spring could impact next year's winter. When planting trees, avoid placing evergreens on the south side of your home. Instead, choose deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the fall. The reason? In the winter, evergreens can block the rays of the sun, which reduces their ability to provide free heat through your windows into your home.
