Pruning trees, hedges and shrubs are gardening chores that should only take place in the fall and winter months. The reason? In spring and summer, birds have started nesting and have carefully hidden their nests in gardens. Haphazardly cutting away at limbs and overgrowth could easily cause damage or scare off birds, forcing them to abandon their eggs or chicks. If you must prune, do so carefully and be observant of any birds that may be flying near the area frequently. If they are, there's a good chance there is a nest nearby.
