If you love honey, do this one thing: Wash the jar thoroughly before placing it into the recycling bin. Honey imported from out of state can contain different strains of bacteria that could be harmful to native bees. If the residue honey inside the jar is put into the recycling bin, the sweet smell could attract bees. The bees can pick up the bacteria and bring it back to their hives, contaminating them.

If you have a problem with rabbits and other small animals digging up freshly planted flower bulbs from your garden, start collecting old berry containers to use as a barricade. Dig a hole in the ground, insert the berry container, plant the bulb inside and cover with dirt. It will create a barrier that prevents animals from digging up the bulbs while giving the flowers room to grow.

Even though we have the best of intentions, many of us forget to bring reusable bags to the grocery store and end up with plastic bags at home. The bags are easily recyclable (usually at the grocery store), but before you do that, give them one more use as produce bags. Clean plastic bags can be used to bag apples, leafy greens, potatoes and any other loose products. Just weigh as usual and bring them home. Then recycle the bags the next time you visit the store.
