Who knew that night owls could save energy and money, helping our environment at the same time? Doing laundry and running the dishwasher at off-peak hours, which are weeknights and during the weekend, helps reduce the strain on the electrical grid and reduces carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Plus, it's usually cheaper to run your electricity at off-peak hours.

It's an oldie but an eco-goodie: Try carpooling with someone at least one day per week to work or to the mall. Just think about what your average commute to work is every day. Now consider what you're paying for gas -- probably more than $3 per gallon. You could save hundreds of dollars a year. Carpool more than once a week and you can save even more money.

One simple way to determine if you have a water leak in your home is to examine your winter water usage. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a typical family of four may have a serious leak problem if "their winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month." If so, it's worth calling a plumber to detect where the leak is. You can also check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If it doesn't read exactly the same, you may have a leak.
