If you have to use disposable paper plates for a party, make the green choice and go with uncoated ones that can be composted afterward. Look for packages of paper plates that bear a composting symbol on the front; this means the plates can be tossed into a compost bin to break down and biodegrade into beneficial nutrients for your garden. To speed up the composting process, used plates should be soaked with water and tossed into the compost pile. But, if you can, always go with reusable plates first.

Bring a plastic Ziploc bag with you the next time you get a haircut. Ask your hairdresser to fill up the bag with your own hair; then scatter it around your house in spots where field mice and other rodents may enter. With the air getting cooler, critters will be looking for places to burrow and live, which may include your own home. Your own hair can be a natural deterrent to keep them away.

Are the waxy, paper cartons your milk and juice come in recyclable or not?
