Many local communities have free computer recycling days to collect old PCs and laptops for proper recycling because throwing them away in the landfill is illegal in most states. In addition to purging your own home for old computers, take the extra step and see if your workplace has old computers gathering dust that you can also recycle.

Organizing expert Peter Walsh says you should purge your closet of clothes, keeping only: those that fit you, those you like and clothes that bring you compliments. This is a good mantra to think whenever shopping for new clothes to avoid re-collecting an entire wardrobe of unworn clothes.

One way to bring kids outdoors while having fun is to have a natural scavenger hunt. Make a list of commonly found items in nature -- pine cones, acorns, evergreen sprigs -- and have the kids search for each item. It’s an easy way for them to reconnect with nature while making it entertaining and educational.
