Water in the morning. On hot summer days, watering wilted plants and dry grass in the afternoon does nothing because the hot, dry sun quickly evaporates the water. The best time of day to water is early in the morning when the outside temperature is the coolest. This gives the plants a good supply of water to face the heat of the day, and there is less evaporation. If you can't water in the morning, wait till after sunset to turn the sprinklers on.

Americans have long been educated to flush their old prescription medicine down the toilet to keep pets and children from accidentally ingesting them. Unfortunately, this logic has enabled our medicines to leak into our waterways, causing aquatic wildlife to show abnormal chemical imbalances; tests in communities around the country also show trace amounts of medicines in our public water supply. The solution: Mix the old medicine with lots of water and stir in kitty litter or sawdust; pour it in a plastic bag, seal it shut and toss into the trash. Better yet: Drop it off at a hazardous waste collection point for disposal.

If you do want to feed waterfowl, skip stale bread and choose more healthful alternatives that are aligned to their natural diet, like grapes cut in half, thawed peas or corn, kale and other leafy greens like romaine lettuce. Also, be mindful of a park's rules on feeding and always clean up after your visit.
