Take a cue from the phrase "if you see something, say something" even when it applies to possible environmental pollution. If you see illegal dumping, questionable substances in waterways or trash filling up in vacant lots, contact local authorities to report it. Even if the matter is already being handled, being certain is better than being sorry.

If you disagree with a stance a company, politician or celebrity has publicly taken, social media can be a great way to get your voice heard loud and clear. Search for them on twitter.com and send a message outlining your question or objection. The majority of the time you should be able to generate a timely response from them.

Ask your local gardening center if they'll donate overgrown or wilting flowers and other plants to you. Large landscaping plants could be used to green a dead public space in your community. Annual plants could be used for kids' craft projects (press them in between books to dry them out). Palettes of plants could even be used around a community center, a senior citizens' home or any other place that needs a little natural dressing up.
