Spend the day going through all of your paper bills -- cable, cell phone, department stores, etc. -- and check each company's website to see if you can elect for a paperless billing option instead. Millions of pounds of paper could be saved if everyone chose this option. Some companies are even rewarding customers with prizes, discounts and even cash to go green.

If you make a habit of burning presentations or data onto CDs or DVDs and overnighting them because the files are too large to e-mail, think about using an online file server system instead. Programs like YouSendIt let you send large files with ease -- and sometimes for free -- which erases the hassle of bounced-back e-mails and the waste and expense of overnight shipping.

When planting a tree in your yard, be sure to choose one that's appropriate for your part of the country and property type. Some fast-growing trees may grow too large and will need to be cut down if, for instance, they disrupt your home's foundation or electrical lines. And some trees will be more difficult to grow or are prone to disease. When in doubt, ask an expert at your local landscaping center to make recommendations for you.
